Looking for hands-on research experience? Want to learn techniques from and work directly with social scientists? Become a Summer Scholar at the School of Human Evolution and Social Change.
This program provides students in our school from historically underrepresented backgrounds with a focused introduction to social science research, inspired by our renewed commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Working with faculty experts, you will engage in fieldwork exercises and seminars that guide you through the research process and help you develop an original research project.

Summer Scholars will learn:
- The objectives and techniques of social science research
- Basic anthropological research methods
- The value of experiential qualitative research
- How to address the ethical issues of doing research with living human populations

- How to produce and present a final research project

Eligibility
- Any ASU undergraduate from a historically underrepresented group (broadly defined) with a major or minor in anthropology, global health, or applied mathematics for the life and social sciences.

HOW MUCH DOES THE PROGRAM COST?
There is no program fee associated with participation in the Summer Scholars program. Those who successfully complete the program will receive a stipend.
WILL I EARN CREDIT TOWARD MY DEGREE?
This is an intensive summer workshop designed to complement your coursework. It is a non-credit program; you will not earn academic credit.
HOW MUCH TIME IS INVOLVED?
Plan to devote at least 20 hours per week to the program.
You will meet twice each week during ASU's summer session A (May 17-June 25). Each meeting is three hours long and will be scheduled between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday. You will have additional tasks to complete outside of the regular workshop hours.
WHAT IS THE STIPEND?
Students who successfully complete the program will earn a $1,500 stipend. The amount will be credited to your student account in two increments.
